Denis Boivin's first
work as a director was his 1976 documentary about Philippe Latulippe, a marathon runner in
his fifties. The long-distance runner and holder of many endurance records was filmed as
he ran from Quebec City to Augusta, the capital of Maine, at the time of the American
Bicentennial, to raise funds for senior citizen's associations.
This is a movie about the limits of the human body. Using the "candid
eye" style which has become a trademark of the director's work, this documentary is a
tribute to determination, endurance, self-improvement and self-sacrifice. Between 1980 and
1984, as marathon races were becoming more popular, The Golden Years
was broadcasted on Quebec television channels more often than any other film. |
