The territory that
has been considered, both historically and traditionally, to be the site of the most
ancient middle-eastern civilisations, corresponds from a geographical point of view to the
Mesopotamia of the Old Testament and to modern day Iraq.
This is the land of the Sumerians, the Assyrians and the Babylonians which
was like a laboratory for the development of future civilisations.
Iraq is a country with a six thousand year history, bearing
great witness to the past.
Iraqs ten thousand archaeological sites represent a
fundamental heritage for the understanding of the history of mankind.
The land of the Arabian Nights shines throughout with the
splendour, marvels and mystery of the whole of the orient.
According to some ancient traditions, it was precisely this,
the land between the two rivers that was the site of the mythical "Garden of
Eden", where the creation of Adam and Eve took place.
The water of the great Flood on which Noahs Ark kept
afloat, probably overflowed here.
According to a local legend Shatt -el-Arab, in the far south
of modern day Iraq, is the place where the mythical tree of knowledge and the forbidden
fruit were situated. |
